OpusClip vs CapCut for turning long videos into Shorts
OpusClip vs CapCut: AI-picked clips or hand-picked edits. Free plan limits, paid prices, formats and captions, and which suits a repurposing client.
The flow
- Check the rights to the footage
- Choose AI-picked or hand-picked clips
- Test both free plans on one recording
- Review every clip before delivery
- Upgrade when a client pays
OpusClip vs CapCut comes down to who picks the moments. OpusClip scans a long video and suggests short clips for you to review. CapCut is an editor: you choose the moments yourself and shape each clip by hand. Both can turn a podcast, webinar or long video into vertical Shorts, Reels and TikToks.

Where each one wins
OpusClip wins when you have a lot of long footage and limited time. It does a first pass on every recording, so your job becomes reviewing and fixing rather than scrubbing through an hour of video. Its suggestions are only suggestions: it can cut mid-thought or mishear names, so review every clip before a client sees it.
CapCut wins when you want full control over a few clips, when the format isn't a talking head, or when your budget is US$0. The free version is a capable editor. The trade-off is time, because you find every moment yourself.
For a repurposing client
An illustrative, simulated week: a client sends one 60-minute podcast and wants 5 clips.
- With OpusClip, you review its suggestions, pick 5, fix captions and cuts, and export. Free won't work for client delivery because of the watermark and the 3-day export limit, so budget at least Starter.
- With CapCut alone, you listen through, mark the moments, then cut, caption and export each one. The software can be free; your time is the cost.
- Many people combine them: OpusClip finds candidates, and CapCut or Descript does the finishing.
Pick OpusClip if
- You process several long recordings a week.
- You want AI-suggested clips plus a scheduler (Pro).
- You'll still review every clip.
Pick CapCut if
- You'd rather choose every moment yourself.
- You're starting with no budget.
- Your clips need custom edits, effects or non-vertical formats without upgrading.
You may need neither if
- The client only wants a few clips a month. The platforms' own editors may be enough.
- Captions are the main need. Look at a dedicated captions tool such as Captions.
Only clip footage you own or the client has the rights to. The Content Repurposing Service blueprint shows the full workflow, and Best tools for a content repurposing service costs the whole stack per client.
